At Eden Surgeries, we understand that a consultation can be a distressing prospect, particularly when it involves an intimate area of the body or when cultural factors apply.
When this is the case, patients have the right to request a chaperone; a person present during a consultation, examination, or procedure, to provide support and potentially protect the patient, and the healthcare professional too.
You can choose between a family member or friend - known as an informal chaperone - or a formal chaperone who will be a trained healthcare professional.
For intimate examinations a formal chaperone is usually required, and their role is to be sensitive, respect patient dignity, and be alert to any signs of distress.
So before your appointment please let us know if you would like us to provide a formal chaperone, or speak to us to discuss any aspect of your upcoming appointment.
